Why do we need integrative medicine for mental health?
To answer that question, we need to first address the problems associated with the “medication model” of conventional psychiatry.
For the last 60-70 years, the main theory for the causation and treatment of mental illness has been the chemical imbalance theory. Over the years, many different medications have been invented to help those suffering from mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, etc.
Unfortunately, we have seen that these medications are not helping people get better in the long run, not addressing the root cause of mental illness, and come with a slew of negative side effects.
So why is that? To really understand the WHY of mental illness, I had to dive into a variety of different modalities – from integrative medicine to functional medicine to Ayurveda. And what have I discovered?
THERE IS NO CHEMICAL IMBALANCE.
What we think of as “mental illness” is not just a disease of the brain or the mind. It is a disease of the WHOLE PERSON. The brain and the mind might bear the symptoms of mental illness, but the root cause is not necessarily found there. The root cause is sometimes found in the diet, gut, immune system, hormonal system, and so forth.
And that is why we need integrative medicine for mental health. Using this approach, we seek to integrate the whole mind-body system as one unit and address the root cause of a person’s suffering.
Integrative health offers a path towards achieving total mental wellness. Towards recovering from mental illness instead of just addressing the symptoms. Our goal is to find the root cause, address it and bring about real change – all achieved by making simplistic changes in our diet and lifestyle.
And the only side effect (or side benefit, as I like to call it)? I see people recover not only from their mental health issues, but also from a variety of other physical illnesses they’ve been suffering from over the years.
